The Home Buying Process - Timeline for a Smooth Transition to Your New Home
There are many things to consider as you make the move to your new home. The following list may assist you.
Four weeks before you move:
- Contact a reputable moving company. Make sure all agreements are in writing.
- Transfer school records.
- Arrange to transfer medical, dental and other important records.
- Prepare to transfer your auto insurance.
- Hold a garage sale to get rid of unneeded items and arrange for the storage of excess items.
- Keep track of moving-related expenses. Your accountant can determine which expenses are tax deductible.
- Obtain and mail change-of-address cards to the post office, subscriptions, credit card companies and important contacts
- Arrange for a final utility reading to be completed at your former residence the day after you move.
- Be sure to have utilities and telephone service turned on or transferred into your name at your new residence the day of settlement.
- Close or transfer bank accounts.
- Terminate newspaper deliver service.
- Arrange for the transfer of vehicle registration and driver’s licenses.
- Have an extra supply of prescription medications for the next four weeks.
- Your real estate agent will schedule a final walk-through of the property to make sure everything is in order.
The week of your move:
- Keep valuable financial records and personal papers with you rather then packing them.
- Get certified funds for closing.
- On closing day, the home purchase documents are signed and the home is yours.
- Start moving into your new home!
